STUDY CLASSICAL DRAWING & PAINTING

ARTISTIC MENTORSHIP IN THE HEART OF FLORENCE

In addition to teaching workshops throughout the year, Carl-Nikolas welcomes students to his private studio in the heart of Florence all year around. In his studio you will be working side-by-side with him for a duration of your own preference, while receiving in-depth instruction on academic drawing and painting techniques in English, German or Italian. His classes are suitable for you no matter if you are a beginner or already advanced. Whether you would like to attend his classes alone or with a friend, he is happy to accommodate you and your wishes. Under his tuition you will have the opportunity to work directly from life and learn both from the feedback you will receive as well as through visual demonstration. On top of that, the beautiful environment and rich cultural history of the city will nourish your artistic interests and fill you with inspiration every single day.

  • • Meeting You on Eye Level - No matter if you are a beginning, intermediate or advanced student, you will receive instruction tailored to your own specific needs and interests. Whether you would like to study drawing, painting or both, Carl-Nikolas will gladly listen to your wishes.

    • Assessment & Feedback - You will receive multiple critiques on your work each day, guiding you towards successful results and guaranteeing an enriching learning experience. Questions and discussions are highly encouraged to stimulate an active reflection on the lessons being taught.

    • Flexibility & Collaboration - It is important to Carl-Nikolas as a teacher to listen to his students’ needs, so he can adapt to them during the lessons and thereby create a collaborative learning experience.

    • Constructive Method - This approach emphasises the simplification of complex forms, promotes a conscious consideration of proportion and perspective and demands a certain understanding of anatomy within the realm of figurative work. With a rich history dating back all the way to the Renaissance, this method has enabled artists to create some of the finest artistic achievements of all time.

    • Sight-Size Method - This approach is of very visual nature and has been refined to perfection by artists from the 19th century. Following this method, one places the easel right next to the subject and focuses on the direct translation of visually striking shapes from life onto the drawing or painting, hence this method lends itself particularly well to the production of rather impressionistic works.

    • Complementary Approach - When combined, the two methodologies introduced above offer maximum versatility, hence enabling oneself to adapt to any subject matter and to depict it with utmost sensitivity. What matters above all is the successful realisation of one’s own artistic vision. One should never be too rigid about any given method, so an understanding of as many different techniques as possible is desirable in order to achieve the greatest form of artistic liberty.

    • Online Mentorship Continuation - Carl-Nikolas offers a one-on-one online continuation of his mentorship program to all students, who have previously studied with him in-person in his studio in Florence.
